Commander s Guide A COMMANDER S GUIDE IN TRAINING TODAY S CHAYOLIM Introduction Imagine I told you that a healthy body is important to me and I d like to try and keep it in shape. Throughout the day, though, you observe that I eat candy, drink soda, and don t exercise at all. You would probably wonder why my actions are not in line with my goals. If a healthy body is truly important, then staying away from food and behavior that harms the body is critical. Hashem created bodies to be healthy; what we must do is try our best to keep them that way. The same thing applies to the health of our neshama. Do you want to keep the pureness of the neshama that Hashem gave us? Do you want to feel kedusha? We all do! However, sometimes our Yetzer Hora tries to convince us to do unhealthy things. He ll say things like: just do this little thing, It s fun; it won t hurt anyone, or do what you re in the mood of.. He may also try to make us bring unholy things into our homes. We must remember that what he s filling our minds with is like the junk food that s not good for us. We need to protect our holy neshomos and keep all the Yetzer Hora s ideas out. Let s look into this week s parsha to see how to master this. במדבר פרק ב פסוק ב "א י ש ע ל דג ל ו ב א ת ת ל ב ית א ב ת ם י ח נ ו ב נ י י ש ר א ל מ נג ד ס ב יב ל אה ל מ וע ד י ח נ ו " The children of Yisroel should camp), each man by his division with the flag staffs of their fathers house; some distance around the Mishkon they shall camp. Torah 2

In parshas Bamidbar, we learn about the Yidden s travels and camps in the desert. Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu that the Chumash twelve shvatim should be organized and divided into camps. The twelve shevatim were divided into four different groups. Each one of those four groups consisted of three shevatim. Each set of three shevatim had a side of the Mishkon that was designated for them and a flag that was unique to their camp. It worked perfectly four sides of the Mishkon, North, South, East and West, for four groups of shevatim. Although the shevatim had specific and different campsites, they were not, chas veshalom, cut off or separated from one another. In fact, just the opposite is true. The Yidden camped in a spirit of unity, like one person with one heart, as it is written, Va yichan (in the singular). Nevertheless, each group of shvatim had a place of its own. Rebbe Rashi explains that the way the Yidden camped and traveled was a box-like shape at all times. They traveled in a square formation and they rested in the same way, surrounding the Mishkon, for the whole purpose of the camp was to protect the Mishkon and its holy keilim. The most important of the keilim was the Aron, which held the Luchos and the Sefer Torah. Just as we protect our treasures by keeping them in a safe place in a special container, so did the Yidden guard and protect the Mishkon and the Aron, which were their greatest treasures. In this way, they traveled safely through the wilderness, and came at last to the good and broad land, to Eretz Yisroel. 3

There is an eternal lesson here for all Yidden. The time of golus is compared to a midbar. In golus, the Yidden travel through a desert full of scorpions, snakes and wild animals. They have not yet come to the safety of their own land, to Eretz Yisroel. But the Jewish people are not alone. They travel with their spiritual Bais Hamikdosh. Hashem said, I will rest within them. This means Hashem will rest within every single Yid, in every Jewish heart. Lesson The Jewish home is also called a Mikdosh. When the people in the home learn the holy Torah and do mitzvos joyfully, the home becomes a holy place. It is as if the Aron Kodesh is right there in the home, with the Luchos and the Sefer Torah. A Yid must know that even while traveling in the wilderness of golus, before he has come to Eretz Yisroel, he still belongs to the Jewish camp. And his job is to protect the spiritual Mikdosh which is in the heart of the camp. This includes the Aron Kodesh and the Torah. True, Torah and Mitzvos do not really need protection. On the contrary, Torah and Mitzvos protect the Yidden. Yet, Hashem gave every Jew the privilege of protecting the Aron Kodesh with the Luchos and the Sefer Torah, and to guard them from all harm. Hashem also gives every Yid, and every Yiddishe child, the power to protect the spiritual Mishkon in his camp. Yiddishe children protect the Yiddishkeit of their home. And they also protect the home itself, and make sure it is filled with blessings, both in physical and spiritual matters. In this way, we prepare to end the journey through the wilderness of golus, all the Yidden together, as one person. Just as the Yidden traveled through the wilderness surrounded by ananei hakavod, so will the Yidden leave golus, all of us happy, healthy and protected by Hashem. And we will come out of golus together, a great congregation, and go into our Holy Land, with Moshiach, bimheira b yameinu mamash, with joy and a happy heart. 4

So chayolim, we can protect our neshomos and our homes from the foreign ideas and junkfood that the Yetzer Hora tries to B chein feed us! Whenever he plants ideas in our minds that are contrary to a life of Torah and mitzvos, we must remember that we are committed to protecting our Mishkon, our neshomo, and ensuring it is only surrounded with kedusha. We must tell the Yetzer Hora with conviction that he has no business interrupting and trying to sway us from keeping our homes and neshomos pure. By doing that, we will bring Moshiach now! 5

English Sicha In Parshas Bamidbar, we learn about the Jewish people traveling through the wilderness and setting up their camps when it was time to rest. Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu that the twelve shvatim should be divided into camps. Three shvatim would come together, forming groups of three, each group with a flag of its own. There were four groups in all. These groups surrounded the Mishkon, which was in the center. One group of shvatim was in the east, one in the south, one in the north, and the last in the west. This is not to say, chas v shalom, that the four groups with their four flags were cut off and separate from each other. Just the opposite is true. The Jewish people were united. They all camped together, like one person with one heart, as it is written, Va yichan (in the singular). Nevertheless, each group of shvatim had a place of its own. Rashi explains that the way the Jewish people camped and traveled was a box-like shape at all times. They traveled in a square formation and they rested in the same way, surrounding the Mishkon, for the whole purpose of the camp was to protect the Mishkon and its holy keilim. The most important of the keilim was the Aron, which held the luchos and the Sefer Torah. Just as we protect our treasures by keeping them in a safe place in a special container, so did the Jewish people guard and protect the Mishkon and the Aron, which were their greatest treasures. In this way, they traveled safely through the wilderness, and came at last to the good and wide land, to Eretz Yisroel. There is an eternal lesson here for all Yidden. The time of golus is compared to a midbar. In golus, the Yidden travel through a wilderness full of scorpions, snakes and wild beasts. They have not yet come to the safety of their own land, to Eretz Yisroel. But the Jewish people are not alone. They travel with their spiritual Bais Hamikdosh. Hashem said, I will rest within them. This means Hashem will rest within every single Jew, in every Jewish heart. 6

The Jewish home is also called a Mikdosh. When the people in the home learn the holy Torah and do mitzvos joyfully, the home becomes a holy place. It is as if the Aron Kodesh was right there in the home, with the luchos and the Sefer Torah. A Yid must know that even while traveling in the wilderness of golus, before he has come to Eretz Yisroel, he still belongs to the Jewish camp. Chany: Thanks for all your help, Sruly. My model mishkon is going to be amazing! Rivky: Does working on it make you wonder about the real Mishkon? Sruly: Hey, maybe someone on the Parshafier is from the times of the Mishkon. Let me check. Yitzy: Hmm I see Na'ava from Shevet Dan. It says that she s a midbar tour guide. Let s meet her! blipblipblipblipshhhhh.boink Chany: This doesn t feel like a usual Parshafier trip. What s going on? Chany Rivky Na'ava: Oh, no need to worry. To get the very best view on this tour, the Parshafier is flying above ground. It s going to take us to a mountain close by look outside your window! Yitzy: Is that the Mishkon? Amazing! Sruly Yitzy GUEST STARRING Sruly: It must be look at everyone camping in their sections. Na'ava: That s right. The campgrounds are in the shape of a box with three shevatim on each side. That smaller one over there is for Shevet Levi. Chany: And inside is the Mishkon! Na'ava NOW IT S YOUR TURN Read this at your Shabbos table, acting out the different characters with your family. Then, discuss the question of the week and apply the Parshafier s lesson to your lives. 2 Hachayol 328 Rivky: And inside the Mishkon is the Kodesh Kedoshim! Inside that is the Aron, and inside that, in the innermost box, are the luchos! Sruly: It s like all the Yidden are giving the Mishkon layers and layers of protection. Na'ava: That s right! The setup of our camp is designed for the safe-keeping of the Mishkon and its keilim. Okay, we re here. This mountaintop will give us a better view. 12

Chany: Oh no, Rivky, I m scared! There s a snake over there! And a scorpion! And some kind of is that a bear? Someone, help! Yitzy: Whoa, the desert is a dangerous place! Na'ava: It is, and our job is to protect the people and Torah inside it. dangers. C mon, Chany, think of our Yetzer Horas! They re scary! Yitzy: He s right When the Parshafier lands back at home, and I study for my Chumash test instead of trying to finish the level on my computer game, I m protecting the Mikdosh in my own camp. Sruly: I m guessing that s supposed to be a lesson for us, right? Protect the Torah from all impurities? Na'ava: You got it, Yitzy! But there s more. Did you kids know that your family's house is also a "mikdosh"? Na ava: My, you are a wise one. When Hashem told Bnei Yisroel to build the Mishkon, He didn t say, Build me a Mishkon so that I can rest in it. Hashem said, תוֹכם ו שׁ כנ תי בּ so that I can rest in them. Hashem is always here and His presence rests in every one of us. Chany: Oooh, really? Now this is getting exciting. Rivky: We all have our own spiritual Beis Hamikdosh. Chany: Cool! So we have to guard the Torah inside of us? Umm but what do we protect it from? Sruly: Well, like the desert, golus is also full of Na'ava: Yep, your job is to protect the Yiddishkeit of your home and keep it safe. When you do, Hashem responds by filling the house with brochos. Yitzy: Wow, I want to keep the mishkon of our home holy and pure. Na'ava: Good!
